Transitional Board Meeting

Friday, August 7, 2020

via Zoom

In attendance:

Marissa Antosh, outgoing chair; Katrina Ireland, conference committee liaison; Kat Lewin, incoming chair; Audrey Snowden, secretary; Ellen Sulzycki, regional member-at-large for the West

  1. Introduce ourselves: Additionally, member-at-large for the Northeast will be Kat Lewin, and currently Carol Gafford represents the Southeast. The YSS board will be co-chaired by @HardcoverTurtle.
  2. Review of bylaws and what we do: Copies of bylaws will be sent to attendees (old ones are on the MLA YSS web portal). Position descriptions were in the call for nominations.

The board usually meets in September, November, January, and March, with a quick pre-conference meeting in April. Next comes the conference, with a transitional meeting/recap in June or July. Marissa is compiling a master list of passwords to All of the (YSS) Things.

  1. Conference updates: The conference committee met virtually on July 24. The conference will be held virtually, and it will be next May, but questions remain about cost (which will  be significantly lower) and format. Out of the eight programs scheduled for this year’s conference, only three will be rescheduled for next May. The committee will put out another call for YSS presenters and will meet again at the end of the month. Katrina will reach out to previously scheduled presenter Charlie Gluck regarding “Starting From the Ground Up: Civic Engagement and Informed Teen Voters”, which the board agreed to sponsor and host as a pre-conference webinar. This will be scheduled to happen as soon as possible, ideally the last week of September or first week of October, but definitely no later than Columbus Day. YSS will use its access to fancy Zoom with webinar features for this event.
  2. Budget: The chair handles the budget, which has been kept the same for the past few years. The only spending this year was on the calendars.
  3. Social media: Meetings, fun links, and professional learning information will be posted on Facebook, and all board members will have editorial access.
  4. Steps for this year: Two items were discussed. First, rebranding the YSS calendar along the lines of “New Year, New Calendar”, as 2020 has been roundly condemned as a trash fire. Second, YSS will sponsor the teen voting presentation discussed under item 3.
  5. Ideas for this year: Please see item 6.
  6. Open discussion/general merriment: Ellen still has the YSS conference basket, which can be repurposed as a door prize for the teen voting presentation.
